Building on my recent research into two historical curvilinear patterns from Cairo, this course unlocks and reveals a whole pattern system extrapolated from these examples. The curvilinear octagon is the central defining feature of a vocabulary which also includes 3, 6 and 12-fold motifs and countless ways of combining them.

We will draw 7 patterns through which I will demonstrate the methodology I have developed, and the potential for further exploration.

The course includes over 6.5hrs of step-by-step video instruction and PDF handouts for each pattern to guide you through the process of drawing them with ruler and compass. I share insights into the construction and drawing process as we go through them. Videos are mostly real-time (with time-lapse used for repetitive sections) and are supplemented with visual presentations which will help build your analytical understanding of the patterns.

This course is suitable for those who have some previous experience of drawing geometric patterns. All steps will be demonstrated and explained in the videos and PDFs so that students can replicate the patterns using ruler & compass or software, although the focus is on ruler and compass drawing.

A list of suggested tools and materials can be found at the bottom of this page.
